From mstrypnts' comments on "If you could be born into any time period, which would it be?"
"As well respected Egyptian when they ruled the world, maybe around 1250BC, it would be a pretty sweet lifestyle and cool to learn how they built the pyramids and how they were so advanced in astronomy."
Hm. This makes me think we should wait a little bit longer.

When was it decided that we would "liberate" all submissions that wound up in the spam folder?
I've been under the impression that the public spam folder was so people could unban things that aren't spam, but had been put there by the filter. And that by removing spam that the filter missed, we are training it.
At least that's what I've been trying to do.

Quick question: What is the "protocol" when a link gets reported? Does it get moved to the spam folder or is it up to the mods to deal with it? For example the other link by wassdj (Boing Boing link) has been reported. I've run across other links that were reported that I personally felt were relevant to /r/A.

DO NOT approve everything. This trains the spam filter to accept the spammers as legitimate posters, increasing the spam that they can post without it being caught. This not only harms us, but the rest of reddit as well. If you see some reported spam that you don't want to add to the spam folder, then just ignore it. Do not approve it.

If only there was some mechanism available to us to make it so posts undesirable to the community for any reason don't show up....a pipe dream, I know.

It takes three reports for something to get sent to the spam folder. If the mods don't want it to end up there, then they have to "approve" it (which is a lot better than the old way of actually sending it there on purpose if it had a report and then unbanning it)
I've run across other links that were reported that I personally felt were relevant to /r/A.
Unfortunately people often use the report link, knowing that enough reports will cause the post to be marked as spam. When we have influxes of ancaps this generally happens to the more left-leaning submissions.

Realistically, how much spam does this subreddit actually get? The spam folder is completely empty. I also don't know that the spam filter works on a per-subreddit basis, I think it just looks for suspicious posting behaviors. You seem to have the impression that there's some AI out there that can take several examples and glean a pattern from them.

It's called heuristic scanning and it's the primary method for combatting spam.
The spam folder is completely empty.
This is because it's cleared automatically afaik, by reddit purging it.

I can't tell if you're trying to be sarcastic or not.
If you're trying to be sarcastic by implying the downoting buttons then you miss the point about spam, which is that if you allow it to go unchallenged, it can become overwhelming for the community to wade through. At the moment you're basically playing with time because it's not happening now, but by the time this does start happening, it's going to be too late.

No. Spam is not automatically cleared from the folder. If the spam folder is empty, that's because there's no spam in it.

The most marking something as spam can do is flag a particular domain or user as someone who spams. This isn't exactly AI and thus we wouldn't really be "training" the spam filter for anything that isn't going to be addressed after the fact.
This is because it's cleared automatically afaik, by reddit purging it.
Do you have any reason to believe this?
re: Spam Folder

We can worry about hypothetical problems or we can deal with actually existing problems. I used to be in the hypothetical problem camp when we started this discussion, now I've since taken a more realistic approach.
it's going to be too late.
How is that, pray tell? Are they going to come for us in the night? The only way we would attract spamming is if it had a positive feedback for them, which won't happen if people just downmod spam.
re: Spam Folder
[-] to joeldavis from dbzer0 [M] via Anarchism sent 10 days ago

Then you do not understand heuristic scanning. It does far more than that but it's really not for here to explain how it works. if you're interested, check Wikipedia.
Do you have any reason to believe this?
It makes sense. There's no reason to keep 2 year old spam in the folder. It just crowds it. Almost all systems which deal with spam auto-clean their spam folders (usually deleting anything older than x number of days)
re: Spam Folder
[-] to joeldavis from dbzer0 [M] via Anarchism sent 10 days ago

This is not a hypothetical problem. This is the reality of dealing with spam. If you're not a webmaster, you probably have no idea how it works.
How is that, pray tell? Are they going to come for us in the night? The only way we would attract spamming is if it had a positive feedback for them, which won't happen if people just downmod spam.
The spam filter falls out of practice becuase it's not fed new samples to improve its heuristic scanning. Spammers perform a few test submits and see a few combinations that are not caught. Then they script it and before you know it, the whole incoming page is filled with spam and nothing but spam. This continues regardless of how much you downvote, because the spam is automated and your filter is out of sync.

not so much "whiner" as troll. Also, the upvotes are obviously fraudulent, the entire text was something so completely ill informed that I doubt people found it all that useful. I think it's much more likely that the user just found a way of voting several hundred times than for a large portion of /r/(A)'ers to have found the text interesting in any way.
Not saying it was mean, it was a dick move, but this guy's obviously trollin'.

I don't know if the upvotes are fraudulent or if we just have a fuckton more statist lurkers than any of us could have ever imagined and they didn't bother to come out of the woodwork until they saw a post they agree with. But yeah, the guy is totally misinformed or just full of shit. For someone who claims to have been an anarchist for twenty years, he doesn't even have a basic understanding of the ideology.

moderator status won't help you with autonomy. all i do with it is fish stuff out of the spam folder.
however, moderator status would help a vandal deface and destroy the subreddit. we can't just hand it out to anyone, especially anyone who actually asks.
but you look like you've got a good history. if you stick around for a while, become an active member of the subreddit, make more than two submissions, and generally be a good sport, i'll probably mod you. or someone else might get to it before i do.
re: Moderators

I second idonthack. Given that moderatorship is the only way to cause some serious headaches (mess with the css, the header or the mods below you without us knowing who it is), I expect people to be somewhat active and interested in being part of the community.

So what's the criteria the community has established for making someone a mod? There's someone I might want to add, but s/he's <gulp> a "yellow star!" I think s/he contributes a bunch to discussion here and holds her/his own in debates, but I don't want to step on everyone's toes if there is already a consensus on this. Like I said, I'm new in the house.

whatevs.
anticapped: The usual criteria is that they just get along with the community for an extended period of time. Once upon a time there was going to be peer-review, but that fell by the wayside. Best way to not rock the boat is to just tell us who you're thinking about and we'll tell you if we've had any red flag experiences with them.

This person seems to have their intellectual shit together even if their ideology is wrongheaded IMO. They can be witty about their wrong-ness from time to time. They comment a lot, and I've seen them make some interesting points. They seem to care a bit about the community and not just be trollin'.
Because I'm new I wanted to ask around and make sure I'm not breaking rules I don't see posted, etc.
re: Noob Moderator Query
[-] to anticapped from joeldavis [M] via Anarchism sent 1 month ago
generally, I (and a know at least a few others) are a little wary of modding ancaps due to worries that they're not going to care as much about things like sharing power. It's a little bit less of a worry now that there's tenure, but it still might be annoying to have to constantly fish stuff out of the spam folder.
I'd prefer him not be modded, but maybe that's just me.

i can read this, but it shows up in a red box. you're not on the /r/anarchism ban list, and there are no posts in the spam box or reported box. it is probably some kind of site-level ban. if the admins don't respond, post here again and we'll help you get their attention

It does it to people who's posts have been consistently downvoted in a subreddit. The "proper" way to solve it is to post higher quality posts or have them be approved by those who can do it. Unfortunately the "higher quality" does not work on a political reddit such as hours where people (wrongly imho) downvote articles just because they disagree with them.

I don't like the idea. While for some things we do have some an audit, for others we really don't and many of these can be changed maliciously and just a little so that nobody notices for a while. The sidebar can be edited to have the links point...elsewhere. The title can be modified to support capitalism. The css, if we choose to keep it, can be modified to add a crapload of shit in it, or silently modified so that stars are started to switch around, one here, one there so the we lose track of what is correct. And so on. Unfortunately, mod power is more than moderation so I think it would be very inconsiderate of us to simply allow anyone to take such power to destroy.
Perhaps the audit logs, when installed will counter such fears, but until such time as they exist, I am strongly against this idea.

[The css could be] silently modified so that stars are started to switch around, one here, one there so the we lose track of what is correct.
Soon, we would be completely unable to determine who originally had stars upon thars.

I guess we should stop modding people while continuing to create more <<stuff>> that gives us more reason not to mod people.
Alternatively, we could just strip out everything that a mod could use to exert influence over their fellow subredditors and mod everyone.

I think this is the sort of thing that significantly affects the whole community, and I think that this kind of change, unlike dbzer0's.
